Tasting wines, comparing them, finding the words to describe fleeting sensations, and above all, achieving the Holy Grail: identifying a wine blind—appellation, vintage, winemaker, and, why not, even your sister-in-law's first name. Alas, the exercise often leads to disappointment. Mimi, Fifi, and Glouglou accumulate approximations, unfounded certainties, and bad faith; they suffer failure after failure, but nothing dampens their spirits. For uncorking a bottle and wondering what surprises it holds remains one of life's greatest pleasures.
